Mike Grillo invented the Gravity Weighted Blanket after the 2016 election. Grillo wanted to help people with post-election anxiety, and so he designed a blanket that would calm the nervous system through deep pressure touch stimulation. Deep pressure touch stimulation simulates the feeling of being held, which increases melatonin and serotonin production. Melatonin and serotonin are the hormones that create relaxation and decrease the stress hormone, cortisol. This leads to improved sleep, which has several significant benefits. These benefits include increased cognitive performance, improved emotional wellbeing, and better physical health. By improving a person’s ability to fall asleep and stay asleep, brain function improves and cognitive abilities are sharpened. Furthermore, proper sleep decreases paranoia, anxiety, and irritability.

The Gravity Blanket was the first weighted blanket marketed to the public. Before the Gravity Blanket’s introduction, weighted blankets were used solely by the medical community to treat mental disorders like autism and PTSD.

In 2018, the Gravity Blanket was named one of TIME Magazine’s best inventions. In a 2019 study, 72% of participants reported a deeper, more restful sleep during the night, across 1000 nights of sleep. Additionally, 76% of participants said they fell asleep faster.

The Gravity Blanket contains non-toxic glass beads within a gridded pure cotton shell. The grids of the cotton shell keep the pellets evenly distributed while the user sleeps. Additionally, every blanket comes with a removable velboa plush duvet cover that is machine washable. Internal clasps attach to the inner weighted blanket and hold the duvet in place.

The Gravity Blanket comes in a choice of 15 pounds, 20 pounds, and 25 pounds. The company recommends that users choose a weight that is approximately 10 percent of their body weight. The original blanket was designed for only one person, at a size of 72″ x 48″, but the company also offers Queen/King blankets, cooling blankets, and travel-sized blankets.

Options

The Gravity Blanket comes in several different variants:

  • Gravity Blanket 72″ x 48″, 15 lb. 20 lb, 25 lb
  • Cooling Blanket  72″ x 48″, 15 lb. 20 lb, 25 lb
  • Queen/King Blanket 90″ x 90″, 35lb
  • Gravity Travel 66″ x 42″, 10lb

Gravity Blanket also offers Weighted Sleep Masks, Flannel-Sherpa Weighted Throws, and a Gravity Pillow.

The Weighted Sleep Mask uses the same deep pressure stimulation design as the blanket. It is made out of micro-plush and imitation cashmere and will block out any light.

The Flannel-Sherpa Weighted Throw is made of soft sherpa fabric on one side and a flannel pattern on the other. It’s the same size as the single Gravity Blanket and offers the same benefits but weighs only 10lbs. In contrast to the other Gravity Blankets, the Flannel-Sherpa Throw is one piece and must be hand-washed or spot cleaned.

The Gravity Pillow is queen-sized and is customizable to your desired level of firmness due to its removal shredded memory foam. The pillow is covered by a Bamboo-based pillow cover, which keeps both sides of the pillow fresh.

Technical details

The original Gravity Blanket is only available in one size (72" x 48") and is designed for a single person. It comes in three weights, 15 lbs, 20 lbs, and 25 lbs, and Gravity recommends that you choose a weight that is around 10 percent of your body weight.

Material/Construction

The Gravity Blanket is made up of two parts: the inner gridded shell and the outer duvet. The inner gridded shell is made of pure cotton and contains non-toxic micro glass beads that give the blanket its weight. The outer duvet is made of 100% polyester microfiber. The duvet is available in grey, white, and navy.

Cleaning/Care

The duvet cover is removable and machine washable in cold water with similar colors. Gravity recommends that users avoid using chlorine-based detergents. The duvet can also be tumbled dry on low heat, ironed and dry cleaned.

For the inner shell, Gravity recommends that users hand wash it and let it air dry.

Return Policy

Gravity Blanket does not offer a warranty on their blankets. They do, however, provide a 30-day night sleep trial. If a customer is unsatisfied with the blanket during the trial period, they can request a return by contacting [email protected]. In doing so, they must provide the following information:
● Customer's name on the order
● Customer's order number
● Customer's email address they used to make the order with
● Customer's shipping address
● Reason for return
● Whether the customer wants an exchange or refund
● Photo of the blanket in its original packaging*
*A picture of the product in its original packaging, i.e. the plastic case, is an absolute must. The company needs the image to ensure that the customer won't take the blame for any damage that might occur in transit.

Returns will only be accepted if they are in their original packaging and in new condition. The plastic casing is required so that the company knows that the blanket will arrive at their distribution center safely. Furthermore, because the item is a piece of bedding, the company has to be very strict about safety and hygiene. They want to avoid the chance that the blanket could pick up a pest that could contaminate the entire distribution center.

If the blanket arrives damaged, customers can request a refund or exchange within 30 days. To return a damaged product, customers must include a description and a photo of the damage in their email.
The Weighted Sleep Mask is not returnable or refundable unless there is a defect or extenuating circumstances. The reason for this is because the mask is hand-wash only, and so for hygienic reasons cannot be returned.
